The New DOT-Approved LP6 from Baja Designs — What UK Riders Need to Know

If you're into powerful, aggressive lighting on your Harley but you've been hesitant about the legality of running the original LP6 on the street — Baja Designs just dropped something you’ll want to see.

Introducing the new LP6 DOT — the first DOT-approved version of the legendary LP6 headlight, designed specifically for road use. It's built for those who want the badass look and performance of the LP6, but with added peace of mind when riding on public roads.

DOT vs ECE: What’s the Difference (and Why It Matters)

This new LP6 is DOT-compliant, which means it meets FMVSS 108 — the U.S. standard for road-legal lighting.

In the UK and Europe, however, we follow ECE regulations (e.g. ECE R112 for headlights). So what does that mean for you?

  • DOT lights are not automatically legal in the UK. They don’t carry the required E-marking.

  • BUT... this LP6 DOT is specifically designed for road use, meaning:

    • It has a proper low beam pattern

    • Meets brightness/distance specs

    • Includes DRL (Daytime Running Light)

So while it's technically not ECE-approved, it's a massive step up in road-suitability compared to the standard LP6. If you're worried about being pulled over or failing an MOT, the DOT LP6 is far less likely to draw attention than the off-road-only version.

What about wiring?

This part's still a bit unclear — Baja hasn’t officially confirmed compatibility. But based on what we’ve seen, we suspect it’ll be similar to the Custom Dynamics Shark Demon headlight, which had:

  • Built-in relays and fuse

  • A simple plug-and-play adaptor connecting directly to your OEM Harley headlight plug.

Fingers crossed it’ll be that easy with the LP6 DOT too — we’ll update you as soon as we have confirmation.

 Final Thoughts

The LP6 DOT is exactly what riders have been waiting for — a headlight that delivers aggressive LP6 styling and output with the added confidence of street-legality (at least in the U.S.). While it’s not E-marked for the UK, it’s clearly a safer and more discreet option than the original LP6 and at £375 its a bit cheaper too.

If you want to turn heads without getting pulled over, this is the one to watch.
